Books to Read (or give) in December!
Though we are suddenly knee-deep in the holidays, and life is very…Very…busy…you know what I’m doing now, more than usual? Reading! Yep. Most nights, I am tucking my little self into bed a few minutes early, turning off the news (right?) and enjoying some reading time before I sleep. It’s part of
my attempt to simplify the holidays, and to get more sleep. (<–a topic Dr. Dave and I will be discussing soon! I’m so excited!)
We’ve also had some cool, rainy weather here lately, so I’ve been in the mood to curl up by the tree with a cup of tea in the afternoon, and enjoy a good book.
As usual, I’m reading a good variety of books, including a sweet Christmas novel (because how fun is that!?) But recently I’ve spent some time diving into a couple of parenting books that I just HAD to tell you about. These would be great to read before the kids are all out of school driving you crazy during Christmas break, and would definitely be encouraging to read before the New Year. While I’m at it, I decided to compile a short list of other favorite books for you, the men in your life, and a few favorite kids’ Christmas books too. Here ya go…
FOR the WOMEN….
1. Parenting Scripts: When What You’re Saying Isn’t Working, Say Something New
My friends Wendy Speake, and Amber Lia just launched Parenting Scripts, and I love it! You may remember these two ladies from their previous book, Triggers: Exchanging Parents’ Angry Reactions for Gentle Biblical Responses. Well, they nailed it again. Their brand-new book, Parenting Scripts, is a guide to help us deal with just about every parenting topic you can think of…with carefully chosen words instead of knee-jerk reactions. Brilliant!! It is a guide. A tool. It is just wonderful! You can read Wendy’s post to learn more about it. (PS This book is great for dads, too.)

2. Becoming MomStrong: How to Fight with All That’s in You for Your Family and Your Faith
Heidi St. John, mom of 7 (yes 7!), blogger, author, podcaster, (hardly human, right? But she is!) wrote this book, and it is nothing short of rock solid. Heidi inspires me in her straight-forward, courageous way of standing strong in the truth in the face of an ever-changing culture. I just love Heidi’s heart and passion.
*Heidi also has a great podcast you should check out!

3. She Is Mine: A War Orphan’s Incredible Journey of Survival
It’s been two years since I wrote about my mentor and friend Stephanie Fast, and her incredible book She is Mine. In case you missed that post, or never got around to reading her book, this is your official reminder! As an abandoned orphan in Korea following the Korean War, Stephanie survived for years on the streets, in the country, and in all kinds of situations before being rescued by a World Vision Nurse, and later adopted by a missionary family. Her story will rock your world. (This book makes a great gift as well.)

FOR THE MEN>>>>
1. We Stood Upon Stars: Finding God in Lost Places
Of course I’ve mentioned this book before (read this post) but now that word is out, and you know that Roger is also one of my book agents, I had to share his book again. Roger is an incredible writer and such a fun story-teller. So, if you need a gift for the men in your life, this is it! (Though women love it too!) Who knows — it may inspire some fun travels in the new year!
Also, have a look at Roger’s newly revamped site. He’s got some beautiful free downloads, and also some super cool ideas for men’s studies, boutique adventures, and more. Have a look!
2. The One Year Daily Moments of Strength: Inspiration for Men
A daily devotional for men. (good for older teens too):
Just ordered this for my son, but pretty confident it will be good as the Walk Thru the Bible Devotionals are always really good! 🙂

FOR ADVENT: Our family is doing the SACRED HOLIDAYS Family Study again this year. There are versions for families, women, men, even teens…(some might only be available in digital version now, but have a look at their site.)
Also: I saw that this one just came out: Unwrapping the Names of Jesus: An Advent Devotional
I love Asheritah, and this looks like a wonderful book!
And for a sweet Christmas novel: Merry and Bright: A Novel. Because Debbie Macomber knows how to pull you into a magical Christmas story. (hello mental vacation. :))
A few favorites for the kids:

Just discovered your blog! I love the inspirational tips! I have never been to Hawaii, but the way you talk about it makes me feel like i am there!
Your sister in Christ,
Emma
I meant to order “WE Stood Upon Stars” for my husband last time you mentioned it but I never got around to it……….just ordered it now! So excited for it to come for him for Christmas. Thanks for the suggestions.
Oh so glad you needed the reminder! Your husband will definitely enjoy it! Thank you for commenting and blessings to you and your family this Christmas season!! xo
So I gotta tell you about the time I bought “who is coming To our house@ and made my mom cry.
See my mom for years has been collecting stuffed animals. Not just any random ones mind you, but realistic looking real animals. She wants to have a plush/stuffed nativity scene so that she can tell her (future) grandkids the Christmas story from the very beginning and not be afraid they will break baby Jesus. She had no idea there was a book out there from the animals perspective. I don’t know if I’ve ever made mom cry with my gift giving skills, who knew it would take a children cardboard book.
Sandy, that is SO sweet! I love that story. I’ve never even heard of a plush nativity scene but I love the idea. Good for your mom! 😉 Thanks for sharing that awesome story. Aloha- And Mele Kalikimaka! xo
