Boys and Perseverance {Aloha Friday Podcast Episode with my son, Jonah}
Happy Aloha Friday!
For this week’s Aloha Friday Podcast episode, my son Jonah is joining me for a quick chat about the character quality of perseverance.
Jonah has grown in character so much over the past few years, and one quality that has stood out to me in him is perseverance. Today I ask Jonah about his mindset as he spent much of his summer studying to (re-) take the SAT. (He studied so much!!) We also talk about Jonah’s job for the past year, working as a dish washer, while waiting to be promoted to bussing tables. (And as we recorded Jonah was preparing for his first night as a busser!)
Jonah inspires me with his perspective on these things, and I hope this episode might lead to some great conversations with your family as you head into the weekend.
A few BOOK TO INSPIRE PERSEVERANCE in KIDS:
(This is a short list, and I would love for you to add some of your own in comments!)
This series is excellent! I’ve read these to all of my boys in elementary school years: Christian Heroes Gift Set (1-5) Christian Heroes Then & Now
a favorite from the past few years for Levi: Hinds’ Feet on High Places: Delightfully Illustrated and Arranged for Children
Helen Keller (Scholastic Biography) (We just read this, but also so many other biographies.
A few of Jonah’s favorites from later teen years:
Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster

Also: at the end of this episode I tackle one more Q & A — responding to a (common!) question about how much time I let my boys spend on devices on school days. (Can you guess what my answer is?)
You can find this and all episodes of the Boy Mom Podcast on all of the various podcast platforms…here are just a few of them:

Have a great weekend you guys! I’d love for you to comment below! Thoughts on this topic? Share more books to inspire boys to persevere!? Or anything else!
I have listened to all of your podcasts from the beginning, and most all of them have really spoken to me, but this one is so timely. This is an area I really struggle in with my boys. I feel they give up easily, and while I push them (force them) to keep going they don’t seem to ever do this on their own. I am constantly looking for ways to instill this quality in them. I am definitely going to have them listen to this podcast with me and use the quotes as well!
Thank you Jessica. It may take time but even YOUR persevering by requiring that THEY persevere is such an example and will in time rub off on them, I really believe! Hope they enjoy listening to my boys. 🙂 Blessings!!
