4 Emotional Milestones our Sons Need to Reach. {Episode 78 with David Thomas}
Aloha Friends!
If you’re a #boymom, today’s podcast guest is someone you most definitely want to be following!! While I had read a number of David Thomas’ books and knew that he counseled at the famous Daystar Counseling Center alongside Sissy Goff (remember her from Episode 72?) I had not officially met David until this interview. And, oh my goodness — I’m a bigger fan than ever after this chat! David is such a great resource for boy moms!
Today David and discuss the book he co-authored with Sissy Goff and Melissa Travathan, titled: Are My Kids on Track? 12 Emotional, Social, and Spiritual Milestones Your Child Needs to Reach. Because there is so much good stuff to talk about, we decided to divide our chat up into two episodes (and maybe more later!) In today’s episode we cover 4 emotional Milestones, with a special look at stumbling blocks for boys to meet these markers. In two weeks, David will be back on with us to cover 4 social milestones for boys, and some of the stumbling blocks we should be aware of related to them.
I love this conversation so much, and especially appreciate how practical David gets on this topic. I highly recommend you check out the book we are discussing, as well as both of the podcasts that David hosts. And I hope to have him back on in the future to discuss Spiritual milestones and a whole bunch of other things. 🙂 (Let me know if you have a suggestion!) Find links to all of these things below:

“Lover” Stage: 5-8 years old.

“Wanderer” Stage: 13-17 years old.
“Warrior” Stage: 18-22 years old.
Emotional Milestones our sons need to reach.
(David expands on each of these in our conversation)
1. Vocabulary True emotional vocabulary. Boys need to be able to name feelings.
2. Perspective Regulate and categorize emotions. (think: scale 1-10)(Not everything is a ’10’)
3. Empathy Important for boys to learn to care about others.
4. Resourcefulness What to do with the emotions you experience. Self-regulation.
