Teach Character, Watch Kids Succeed, with Dennis Trittin
Character Principles for a Successful Life
We all want our kids to have good character, but we don’t always consider how crucial character is to our kids’ future success. In today’s interview, former multi-billion-dollar investment manager, Dennis Trittin, helps us connect the dots and find even more motivation for raising kids of character.
After over 30 years managing investments and studying successful leaders all over the world, Dennis shifted his focus to sharing what he had learned with the next generation. Writing books and speaking to students, parents, and educators, Dennis is passionate about inspiring the next generation to embrace the kind of character that will help them get jobs, (and not get fired from them!) nurture healthy relationships, and live happy, fulfilling lives. Today we draw from his book, What I Wish I Knew at 18: Life Lessons for the Road Ahead.

DENNIS’ 5 Life Success Pointers for Raising Kids of Character:
1. Define a successful life. (hint: It’s not about riches.) “The way we define success in life will govern how we live our life.”
2. Preserve your reputation and integrity at all costs. {Take the integrity challenge! 😯} “You may not always be liked or loved but you must be trusted.”
3. Surround yourself with positivity.
4. Give everything your best. {Helen Keller: “I long to accomplish great and noble tasks, but my chief duty is to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble.”}
5. Solicit and embrace constructive feedback. {As your employer/coach/teacher, “Where can I up my game?”}
Dennis’ Key Character Traits (8): Kindness, compassion, gratitude, integrity, grit, intrinsic motivation, other-centeredness, commitment to excellence. (mine are very similar!)
Specific Parenting Strategies:
- Create situational character conversations around key character traits…set a “character trait of the week”.
- Initiate opportunities where kids can see your character in action.
- Remember: Kids will do what you praise. Focus on the heart more than the outcome.
