The benefits of reading aloud, audio books, and so many inspiring tips and lists for you this summer!
Sarah Mackenzie is with us today to talk about all things summer reading! Sarah is the author of Teaching from Rest and The Read-Aloud Family, and I have been a fan of Sarah’s for many years. Sarah is so much fun to talk to, and an absolute wealth of information and inspiration when it comes to families and reading.
In today’s conversation Sarah offers some super motivating facts about the power of reading aloud, and tells us the best age-range for reading aloud (hint: no one is too old for read-alouds! – And my sons would agree!) Sarah gives some super helpful book recommendations (especially for middle-age boys who don’t love to read!) and many more practical tips and resources for families and reading this summer. You might want to take notes on this episode (but I will also have a lot of links and notes over on my website…)
NOTES AND LINKS:
Why read aloud? I LOVE THIS –>> “Reading aloud is the only place we hear grammatically correct, sophisticated language.” – Sarah MacKenzie
Even ten minutes a day of reading aloud will add up to 60 hours in a year!
Audio books!! — Use them on road trips, or listen together over breakfast!
Great goal for summer reading: Read one hour a day!!
Books mentioned in this episode (specifically for 12 year-old boys range!)
Graphic novels by Ben Hatke. Start with “Mighty Jack“.
Graphic novels by Tom Probert. “Lightfall” is a good one to start with.
“The Edge of Extinction” (Book #1 in a series by Laura Martin)
Look for lists of “Books that Boys Love” and “Books that Girls Love” on Sarah’s Website.
OR….TEXT “BOOKS” to 33777 to get access to book lists!! (So cool!)
