Let’s Talk about Youth Sports, {Episode-149 with Carla Hanes}
Let’s Talk About Youth Sports, with Carla Hanes. A Mom-to-Mom chat about raising kids with sports!
Do you love youth sports, or dread them? Are you an enthusiastic fan, or would you rather avoid every gym, field, and court possible? Do you get excited to see your kids growing in strength and character through sports, or do you see them bringing out the dark side in your kids? Let’s face it – If your kids play sports, they will likely be a big part of your life! There is a lot we can talk about on this topic!
After I shared a series of Instagram Stories asking for your experience and feedback about youth sports, I decided this topic was worthy of a full podcast episode. I thought it would be fun to bring a real-life friend on with me, so I invited my friend Carla, whose sons are in very different sports from mine! In this fun conversation, we talk about the good and difficult parts of youth sports…with an emphasis on the good! Carla is an enthusiastic football, soccer, and track mom, and I think you’ll find her passion contagious! Grab a coffee (or put on your sneakers!) and join Carla and I for this fun chat all about youth sports!

More about Carla:
Carla Hanes grew up in Hawaii as the daughter of missionaries, and spent a large part of her childhood on the mission fields of Asia and the South Pacific. She attended Westmont College and graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University with a degree in Political Science/International Relations with a heart to work in government. After working on Capitol Hill for the Majority Leader of the House and Elizabeth Dole, she relocated to the west coast and worked in fashion and entertainment public relations. She met and married Taylor Hanes and moved back to Hawaii for a few years before they relocated to the South to be closer to his family. They and their three boys now reside in Dallas. Carla travels and speaks throughout the year in various venues and is deeply committed to the message of identity and inspiring people to change the world by living out the call of God on their lives. Being mom to three boys, Jack, Luke and Tay is the greatest blessing of her life, and there’s no place she and her husband would rather be than cheering them on as they do what they love, playing sports.

I loved this conversation so much! I have 2 boys, 9 and 4, who play football, basketball, baseball, and soccer between them. I could relate to her good coach and bad coach stories. There is so much the whole family learns during a sports season.
This was one of my favorite episodes. As a mom of a United States Naval Academy midshipman, who will become a 4th generation Naval Officer, Carla’s passion for honor and commitment left me with prideful tears, and an agreement on some things that are missing in our culture. We also have the you can’t quit mid-season rule in our home.
Thanks also for the list of movies. My youngest son is a baseball and basketball athlete, so I know we will be watching some of these movies in the near future.
Hey Colleen! I love hearing this from you so much. I feel the same way when I hear Carla — it’s so important that we are reminded of these things! Big hugs to you!
