CTC Math review
Homeschool curriculum review
Hi Friends! Since I have been sharing about CTC Math on my podcast recently, a lot of people have been asking me about this curriculum. I thought I would share some notes here and would suggest you go to the CTC Math Website to learn more!
CTC Math is an online math program for kindergarten through high school which can serve as your core homeschool math program, or to supplement other math courses. This program was created and is taught by Australian math teacher Patrick Murray. (a homeschool Dad to 10! )
I looked into CTC Math after hearing Durenda Wilson talk about it on her podcast. Durenda is a seasoned homeschool Mom and I trust her opinion! I also saw that CTC Math is listed on Cathy Duffy’s Top 103 Homeschool Curriculum list.
CTC Math has many features that I appreciate. I’ll name a few here, then you can go to the CTC Website to explore more….
CTC Math uses video tutorials and summaries which are clear, complete, and easy to follow. Theses are short (4-9 minutes,) so they keep a students’ attention while covering the material thoroughly.
The tutorials use graphics and animations with Patrick Murrayโs voice-over explanation. Murrayโs Australian accent is very understandable. The program uses U.S. currency in the U.S. Version (If you are in Great Britain or Australia I think they use those countries’ currencies for your student’s course work.)
CTC Math uses adaptive questions — these are interactive questions which change in difficulty dpending on the student’s ability. (They use smart algorithm which tracks the students’ progress and delivers questions based on their needs. The student doesn’t even konw this is happening, which helps them build confidence and master concepts!)
The structure for the online classes is easy to follow: For each course, lessons are divided into a number of โstreamsโ or broad areas of math then further divided into topics within each stream. Then each topic will have a number of lessons. There are a number of lessons for each of these topics. This amounts to a lot of content at each grade level.
After the tutorial, students are given a series of interactive questions. Students type their answers into the computer or use the mouse to select an answer. The program immediately scores their work, and it also maintains student records. You can print a page showing the problems with their step-by-step solutions.
There are diagnostic tests that can help you determine which level your child should begin in, as well as plenty of options for using tests to determine if your child might be able to skip to a new section or grade level. (They also offer short, standard, or comprehensive tests you can choose from.)
You can print out a one-page summary of each video tutorial to use as a reference or review if you wish.
If students get a number of problems wrong, they can re-watch the tutorial and are offered a new set of problems to work through. This gives students nearly unlimited chances to practice what they are working on if they need extra time on a concept.
CTC MATH also offers a 12-month no-questions-asked Money Back Guarantee! That might be reason enough to give them a try! ๐
Now a few things straight from the CTC MATH Website:
“Obviously no one can force a young person to study math, but what we have done here is to provide materials that are interesting and stimulating in themselves, and which will encourage the student, once started, to continue studying.”
