  1. A few months ago I reconnected with my childhood best friend online. We saw each other for the first time in 18 years last month! We grew up together in Kentucky and now live 3 hrs away from each other in Oklahoma! It has been amazing and such a blessing to both of us and is like a part of our childhood is back. We now have new and old memories to share and I can’t wait to share this with her.

  2. This makes me want to drive 5hrs to see my bestest “old” friend tomorrow!! I so wish I could. It is so nice to be able to feel like no time has past and just pick up where we left off. The only sad part is that each visit never seems to be long enough. 😢

Thank you for writing this article!

  3. Last fall I was finally able to get away and spend a few days with a friend who had moved. Another friend, who had moved to a third location, joined us. It was such a great time to reconnect. It is “easier” to let friendships die, but longterm friendships are a joy, and not something you can buy off a shelf. They are worth maintaining!

  4. Nothing rejuvenates and fills my soul like time with my oldest friends! A rare and wonderful treat

  5. This is such a heartwarming post, Monica. How fun that Melissa (and Chuck 🙂 ) were able to spend a couple of days “doing real life” with you and the fam!

I loved your six “old friend” points — they’re so true! God blessed me with not one, not two, but five of these friends (and we’re all friends together!). We formally coalesced as a six-pack, if you will, in high school and have kept up with each other ever since. Through international military postings and new babies, through celebrations and misunderstandings, we’ve stuck together. It’s the beyust. 🙂

Also, shoutout to mobile technology to allow us all to stay on the same page! We have a group text thread that we all participate in so we can stay up-to-date on the goings-on with each other. This has been a fabulous way to share emergency prayer requests and collectively praise God for His providence. (The best part is sometimes looking at your phone and seeing you have, like, 20 text messages waiting for you. 🙂 )

Here’s to longstanding friendships! And here’s to forging new friendships that will one day also be “old” friendships! <3

Thank you for this uplifting reminder, Monica! My very dearest friends are in my life from very different eras, from age 8 as a pen pal (YES, we are still so close and we met in a Sticker Pen Pal Club!!), to age 12 being a new kid at a new jr. high (yikes!), to neighbors that became BFF’s as we had children. God placed these very special ladies in my life at times when I needed them most, and I continue to feel the blessings of these friendships even if I don’t see these ladies every day. I posted this to Facebook and will share with all of them. Thanks for the smile!

    1. Oh I LOVE that Laura! And at age 8 I would have LOVED to have a sticker Pen Pal! Puffy stickers were my favorite thing, haha! (and yes, I hadn’t thought of that in so long until you mentioned it!)
Such sweet memories and I love hearing about your sweet friends. Thank you for sharing and for commenting! Aloha-
