Josiah and I had a truly great week in Southern California last week. We flew back home Friday night to hit the ground running with a full weekend of surf contests in Honolulu. Monday came too quickly, and I am still feeling less-than settled at home. (my suitcase might still be half-full.)
(at least it’s not half-empty. *hehe*)
We are wrapping up our school year (or trying!) over the next two weeks, as well as crossing a whole lot of items off a big “must-do” list. With that in mind, you get why I’m just dropping in with a few updates/photos, and then sending you off with some really great links to keep busy with!
1st: Southern California. Oh SoCal…I have such a love/notlove relationship with you! Josiah and I agree that Southern California is so amazing and a ton of fun, but we’re just not used to it…The intensity of the drivers, (quit honking at me!!) the fast-pace everything (we live on “island-time”…) or the fancy cars, fancy houses, fancy people….It’s just another world that I always love to hate. (Or maybe hate to love?)
My meeting with Guy and Amber and the Hollywood executive producers (I’m still not even sure what I’m talking about-) went very well! They took some video and next they are gonna play around with ideas that involve me and my family and our little life (island time and all…) But lest I mislead you: No, I don’t have a tv show and this is really all in the very early stages of “who knows?” and “What if!?” and “Wouldn’t that be crazy?…”
And that is honestly a lot of fun…
But here is something new I learned: If you’re invited to an interview in front of a “green screen”….it’s probably best not to go out and buy yourself a new “green blouse” for the “green screen” interview. Because (duh!) if you do, they’ll ask you to wear your big, heavy sweater-wrap for the whole interview. The interview in which you’re already super nervous (read: sweating!) not to mention sitting in front of some very hot lights and a big camera.
#oops. (I’m new here.)
The rest of our trip was all about college visits, friend visits, surfing (from San Clemente to Manhattan Beach!) and just cruising. Since we looked at a few schools last summer, we really only had a couple left on our list to check out. We’ve narrowed our search to small, liberal arts Christian colleges in reasonable proximity to the beach.
Aaaaannnndd: Josiah and I both fell in love with Biola! Everything about it felt right to us. Just a perfect fit. He’ll still apply to a number of schools, but our visit to Biola was definitely a game-changer. And wow that is a really great feeling for a mom!
My high school BFF Kari and her family hosted us in Manhattan beach.
And there’s nothing like an old friend to make you feel fifteen again. I love this girl so much.
Josiah loves that Kari’s house is a short walk to the beach, and he already knew her neighbor’s son, so he had a surf buddy ready to go…We spent one morning in San Clemente so Josiah could surf with his old best friend who used to live in Hawaii, and we got to have lunch with Bryan Jennings from Walking on Water.
I actually feel like we have an entire extended family in Southern Cal and that is really cool.
My favorite part of the trip was just time with this kid. He’s a ton of fun, and growing up to be such an interesting, funny, and thoughtful person. I know this whole trip was really to prepare for him to leave home in a year but honestly: I just can’t even.
Let’s talk about something else…
In other exciting news, we have signed Jonah up to spend this JULY in Indonesia with Surfing the Nations.!! A few of you who have been around a looong time might remember that Josiah went on that trip about four years ago and it was amazing. We are thrilled for Jonah to have his turn!
Luke will be traveling to California with some good friends at the end of May, and Dave and I will be taking turns joining him later in June for his U.S. Championships, (Trestles, San Clemente) and then on to Nationals (Huntington Beach.) It’s never simple, but it’s always exciting.
FINALLY: If you happen to be on my island and you are a Mother, you are officially invited to join me this weekend on the North Shore for RADIANT–An afternoon for moms! My friend Jules and I will be speaking and it is going to be a time of encouragement and inspiration. Also, food and laughter and hugs and loveliness because that’s what women do best! Hit The Mission North Shore website to sign up and I’ll see ya there!
Now while I hit the laundry and the mail and the kitchen (oh yeah and that suitcase), you go have a look at some of these great links!
