Dave and I are very particular about what kind of sunglasses we wear for a few big reasons:
1. Dave, being a doctor, will tell you all about UV Rays and the importance of protecting our eyes from the sun. Sun damage to eyes can cause a lot of serious problems. One problem we see a lot around here is something called pterygium (pronounced “ter-i-gee-um”, also known as “surfers eye.”) This is a growth of pink fleshy tissue on the white of the eye that can grow over the pupil and interfere with vision. We know people who are facing a tricky surgery to try to repair this problem. Dave is adamant about protecting all of our eyes.
2. The view. We both spend a lot of time staring out at the ocean, watching kids surf, and enjoying our beaches. The difference between a good lens and a cheap one?…Well, it’s HUGE. Lenses are everything!
3. And let’s be honest: Style. I like to look good as much as the next middle-age mom (haha) and I can use all the help I can get. When you live in shorts and tank tops, your sunglasses may be the biggest style statement you will make in a day. Might as well make them count.
With all of that said, we believe in investing in good sunglasses. And it is absolutely true that Dave and I have been fans of Maui Jim sunglasses above all others since the first time we tried them — nearly twenty years ago. Maui Jims are by far our favorite sunglass brand because they fit all of Dave’s (geeky doctor) criteria, and they are truly great to look THROUGH, and AT.
So when Maui Jim reached out to ask if we were interested in reviewing a few pair of sunglasses? Well, I thought I had died and gone to blogger heaven. It just doesn’t get much better than this.
^^also, the prettiest packaging and sweetest hand-written note to go with the sunglasses…these guys have nailed the “Aloha Spirit.”
Guys, wherever you live, I hope you know the importance of wearing quality sunglasses. Just like you should wear sunscreen year round any time you are outdoors, (regardless of the weather) you should protect your eyes from harmful rays year around as well.
With that in mind, there is so much to love about Maui Jim sunglasses. Let me just name a few things: Maui Jims were born on the beaches of Maui, and still has its home office in downtown Lahaina. Maui Jims have a PolarizedPlus® lens technology which blocks 100% of UV rays and have earned the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation as an effective UV filter for the eyes and surrounding skin. Maui Jims eliminate 99.9% of the glare from any surface, and instead of dimming the light, color and clarity are actually enhanced using natural light! There are a variety of lenses to choose from, depending on your preferences, but they are all insanely beautiful to look through! More great news: 95% of Maui Jim glasses are available in prescription! Thankfully Maui Jims are impact resistant, (I tend to break things) but if you do need a repair, Maui Jims has the greatest customer service ever, and the typical turnaround time to get a repair done is three days. (What!?)
In fact, true story: Before we even moved to Hawaii, Dave owned his first pair of Maui Jims. He loved them but had honestly beat them up pretty bad. We planned to vacation on Maui, so he brought the glasses along just in case we happened to find their headquarters. When we literally happened upon their adorable little storefront right in old town Lahaina, Dave sheepishly went in to ask about a repair. The kind person at the front desk took the glasses, disappeared for a quick moment, then returned with a brand new pair of the same glasses. No questions asked. At that point we were committed. Customer service is a big deal to us.
Now here’s the info on what you see us wearing… Me, in Maui Jim Mavericks in silver with Blue Hawaii lenses.
Mavericks are super lightweight, with an incredible viewing experience. I’ve always loved the aviator style, they are just classy and fun. The lens on these blows my mind, such beautiful colors and clarity. They are lightweight and I almost forget I’m wearing them they are so comfortable. (Side note: I first ordered the Baby Beach frame, but I had not checked the sizing carefully. They were too small for my (medium size) face. Mavericks are larger frames which is how I like to wear aviator-style glasses. And all glasses. :)) So happy with how these fit! Dave in the Wassup in Matte Rubber Black with Maui HT™ lens.
The Wassup line is known for durability and high-performance optics. Again, these come in a variety of frame options, from a sophisticated wood grain appearance to a gloss finish. Dave likes to block the sun coming in on the sides, and these do a great job of that. He is so happy with the clarity and color through the lenses. Also: So lightweight and comfortable! Me in Sweet Leilani in Rootbeer Blue with the HCL® bronze lens.
Sweet Leilanis are a newer addition to Maui Jim’s growing family of cat eye fashion frames. I love these! These are available in four different colors. Again, every color pops through these, and my world is a bright, cheery place. They fit my face perfectly, and look good with everything. I’m living in them.
A big Mahalo to Maui Jims for allowing us the chance to gush a little about our genuine love for their brand. We will be enjoying these glasses for many years to come. Hope you all find your way to the Maui Jim website as well to check out all of the styles and lenses for your own family. Because it’s true: Maui Jim sunglasses help you enjoy the view no matter where you are.
Aloha friends, and see you all soon!
