Luke and I have been in Southern California for one week now, and my heart is truly so full. Luke had a career highlight surf contest, I survived my first few speaking engagements (without passing out or forgetting
any too many words) and we have been loved on and cheered for by some of the kindest people (and pets) in all of the world.
The weather has also been fabulous!
I thought I would share our first week highlights before the buzz wears off.
Starting with Luke’s Rip Curl contest win. Woot woot.
This is exciting on a few levels. First of all, this is a super competitive contest with kids competing from all over the country (and some international.) The conditions were challenging so Luke had to battle it out for the win. Also: winning is always great, and this particular contest rewards the winners well. But lastly, and my favorite thing, is that this qualifies Luke for the Rip Curl National finals in November. And guess where the National Finals are being held this year?…Yep! You guessed it (or maybe you didn’t but…) In Ventura, California!!…Which happens to be a few short miles from Westmont College where Josiah will be at beginning this fall.
How happy is my Mom-heart?
Meanwhile, we feel like this contest win is a great way to kick off Luke’s California surf contest season. He has US Champs and NSSA Nationals still to come over the next four weeks.
Enough about Luke, now let’s talk about me. (haha. :))
I have had four speaking engagements so far, and there is one more scheduled this weekend. I do admit I came over feeling
a tad super nervous. Though I’ve always enjoyed speaking, I haven’t done a lot of it in the past few years. I have been raising/homeschooling boys out in the country, (on an island!) so I have intentionally chosen to focus on things I can do from home. (Or at the beach :)) But with the book coming out next year and all of the preparation for that, I really appreciated the chance to share some sneak peaks at all of the work I’ve been doing!
^^a little fuzzy screenshot of a video of my speaking at the Camp Mama event at The Shoreline Church, San Clemente. (But can’t you tell I’ve got some important things to say there?… hehe.)
I was so thankful for the warm welcome from every group and the events have been a total blast. I’m so grateful and look forward to more ahead. A highlight was when I discovered a number of amazing women who made the drive from other towns to be at each speaking event. This girl wins the prize, having loaded up her kids and driving from Bakersfield, Ca. to San Clemente (and back!) for one evening to hear me speak. (Pretty sure that is a 6 hour + round-trip.) Somebody give the girl a medal.
My theme for these events has been to live a summer of INTENTION, with lots of practical application included. The topic seemed to strike a chord with many women. I’ll try to come back here soon to share some of my speaking notes!
More of our friends from here in Ca. as well as all over the country are arriving so Luke and I are having a blast catching up, sharing meals, and thoroughly enjoying this time away together. Monday, my sweet little Levi will be joining us, coming in on a flight allbyhimself!! Prayers for him would be appreciated, or maybe more for the flight attendant who will be assigned to him and likely called on to deliver 16 cups of Ginger Ale during the 5 hour flight. (In order to convince him it would be ok to fly alone, Luke sold little brother on the benefits of the “call button” feature when traveling as an unaccompanied minor. Sorry in advance, Hawaiian Airlines.)
Now it’s your turn! How are you so far this June? Summer plans or life updates? What are the kids up to this summer? I love to hear from you!
Thanks for following along and being a part of our journey. You guys are awesome!
PS Though I love California for its amazing healthy foods, this is what Luke and I go for, straight off the airplane. 🙂 #inandout
