    Monica–

What filters do you use? We have mostly apple products (I saw below someone had mentioned some windows options). We use this book and I am so thankful for you introducing it. I saw they have a new younger child version coming out, so am interested in seeing that when it is released!

    1. Hey Christina, So glad you use the book, and yes I am looking forward to the younger child edition. I actually hope they come out with an older (teen) edition as well, but the current one they have seems to work for all ages. We use Covenant Eyes for our filter. It has been very easy to use, and customer service is great. Small monthly fee but SO worth it! 🙂

  2. Hi Monica! I want to thank you for recommending this book! I just read it to my 7 and 8 year old. I’ve been wanting to address this topic with my kids for awhile now, but didn’t know how to go about it. This book was so easy to understand and really helped guide the conversation with my kids. Thankful to be able to porn proof my kids and am recommending it to all my friends.

  3. How do I email this to a friend? Thanks!

    1. Thank you Meghan. Do you mean email this post? If so, you can just highlight over the address bar at the top of your screen (the “URL”) and copy it. Then paste it in your email. It’s quite easy but I know if you don’t usually do things like that it might sound harder than it is. 😉 If nothing else just send your friend to monicaswanson.com and tell her to use search bar in my side bar to find “Kids and Porn.” Thank you and aloha!

  4. GREAT resources and help… any chance that this will be translated into German any time soon???
    Thanks so much!

    1. Thank you Petra! I’m not sure, but definitely hop over to the Pornproofkids.org site and ask them over there. I’m sure they’ll be quick to respond! 🙂 much aloha-

    2. Hi Petra,

there is a German version for book on amazon.de: Schöne Bilder Schädliche Bilder: Kinder von heute proaktiv gegen Pornografie immunisieren Ein Praxisbuch für Eltern.

      Sincerely,
      Jisca

  5. I just visited your website. We have tried to raise our 6 children in Christ. We thought we had taught our oldest children the dangers of porn, and how to avoid it. Unfortunately, our oldest son (now 18) went looking for it years ago. This lead to inappropriate touching of his little sister, as well as many behavior problems. To say I am scared in raising my other 3 boys (ages 12, 3, and 8 months) and 2 girls (ages 15 and 10) in this world is an understatement. Pornography has deeply hurt our family, and has damaged the vision I once held for us all. I would like to read your book. Maybe it will help us with the others, where we failed before. Thank you.

  6. Your blog has scared the heck out of me and has a fire burning to get going on these things before it’s too late. I know you have boys but any good resources or blogs that cover the girl side?

    1. Oh that is a great question. There are so many wonderful blogs out there, but I’m not sure if I can suggest one specifically to cover these topics. But I hope you’ll stick around my site anyways, because most of what i say does apply to both boys and girls! Much aloha, and sorry (but not sorry) for scaring you! haha. 😉 Keep up the great work!

  7. Kylie Kopp says:

I visited the site. Thank you so much for sharing this book! It sounds fantastic! I’m sad that we need it now days 🙁

  8. checked the site out and had only wished we had found it about a year ago. Unfortunately our family including 3 boys and 1 girl was effected by porn. My son was introduced at a much younger age than what I ever thought we would have to deal with this at. It completely devastated me .

    1. Oh Rachel, I am so sorry. But I’m so glad you commented because people need to hear stories like that so they realize that this is a problem that affects young kids! 🙁 Much aloha and I pray that there is not lasting damage from what you went through.

  9. Working through all of this right now with our kids. What a timely message. I love the PornProofKids website. I will be sharing.

  10. Read the article! Great information! !

  11. As a nursing student, I can really appreciate the approach this book takes. It’s very refreshing. I have a 5 year old son and this subject is often on my mind!

  12. Lisa Brooks says:

    1. Thank you Lisa! I’m so sorry, the giveaway did end at the end of August. But I’m glad you visited the site and hope you’ll order the book! 😉 Aloha-

  13. Visiting the site as we speak. Great info. Wish this wasn’t something that had to be discussed.

  14. I am going to sign up at pornproofkids.org too. My son’s father is an addict and I’m so worried about my son being exposed. He’s 2 now and I want to do everything I can to protect him!

    1. Oh Dawn, I’m so so sorry to hear about your son’s father. It’s awful. 🙁 By being aware there is a lot you can do to protect your son. Much aloha and glad you commented–it really is good for everyone to realize how many people pornography affects in a damaging way. Aloha!

  15. Elizabeth says:

Thank you for this! Working w teens at church we find so many parents who ignore this. What a resource this book is. Will definitely be sharing. I checked out the website right away.

  17. Melissa Gilchrist says:

I have checked out the website and it is great. I know that I have not gotten here before the cut off date for the books, but just found your site. I have subscribed now. How do I order this book? Thanks

  18. I subscribed and ordered the book! This topic terrifies me, but needs to be addressed. Thank you, Monica, for bringing these resources to us!

  19. Thanks so much for this! My kids are getting older (10 and 8) and this is something we definitely need to have a chat about since it’s so pervasive in our culture. I remember going to a friend’s house as a child and seeing porn magazines all over the living room. Not something I want to happen with my kids!

    1. eww, yuck! What a memory (though I have similar memories from sleepovers and finding things with my friends…yucky memories!)
Thank you and I hope you get your hands on this book! aloha-

  20. Ashleigh George says:

I visited but did not see the post in my email until today hope I can still be included in the giveaway!

  21. Checked out the website. Curious about the book. I have a 10 year old boy and would love a copy of the book!

  22. I love your blogs! Visited the site and really need to dive into this subject with my boys (10 & 13), I keep saying they are boys and their dad will do it. However the more I read the more I realize I must take an action on this as well. Keep up the lessons….we all need more encouragement and support. Thanks again! Would love a copy of the book.

  23. I checked out the site! Thanks so much for this info Monica!

  24. Just looked at the pornproofkids.org site. I have been wondering how to talk to my 13 yr old about this and I want to get a copy of the book to share with Mom’s of other middle schoolers. Thanks.

  25. I did visit and subscribe to the Porn Proof Your Kids site. I am so thankful to see the issue addressed in this way and have great expectations going into this. I also will be getting the Kindle version of the book. This is a much-needed resource! The enemy is defeated!!!

  26. Visited. I so appreciate your heart and your blog! Thank you for encouraging other parents!

    1. Thank you Melanie! And I so appreciate you visiting and taking the time to tell me. Much love–

  27. I love reading your posts. However, I am a little jealous that you get to have warm days all year long. It is too cold here in NJ. I am having a very hard time trying to get on due to my filters-even when I approve it. Please tell me where I can get this book.
    Thank you

    1. Oh dear…I’m sorry Lisa (about the weather and the trouble getting on the website.) That happened to me at first, but I just refreshed my browser a couple times and then I got on fine! I hope that helps.
If not then please let me know and i’ll find a direct email for you to get in touch with the authors. You also should be able to find the book on Amazon…?
And BTW–way to go with the filter and all! 🙂 XO

  28. Thank you. I look forward to reading more!

  29. Sunshine S. says:

Visited the site and subscribed. What great info! This is exactly what I’ve been looking for to help me further conversation on this topic with my 10 and 13-year-old boys!

  30. I have visited and subscribed! Thank you for sharing this! Talking to our kids about this can be hard but it helps with great resources like this… remember..we can do hard things:)

  31. I visited porn proof your kids. I have 3 boys, hope I’m not too late!

  32. Stephanie Reed says:

Loved this article! Though I must be honest, I got a terrified feeling inside my chest when I read it. What a scary world our kids grow up in! Thankful for you and your ministry to raising Godly men!

  33. I visited the pornproof site. I hadn’t thought about the fact that my 6 year old might be exposed to porn. This is definitely something my husband and I will have to address.

  34. Thanks so much, Monica, for providing this information and tackling this subject! I subscribed to Porn Proof Kids and got the download!

  35. Elaine Wrick says:

  41. I visited. If I don’t win, I will be ordering the book shortly!

  42. Michelle Waldrip says:

This is a great post that came up in my Pinterest feed. So many more ways for kids to get harmed or start harming others with all the tech available in this day and age. I guess there is no “too soon” these days. Too many sad stories already amongst my extended family and friends. I’d rather my two dudes be prepared and have a moral, family-oriented perspective delivered by me and my husband. Mahalo for informing and equipping!

  43. Thanks for sharing Monica, I have just requested the book good pictures bad pictures through my local library, what a great resource for such an awkward topic.

  44. Kimberly Lunsford says:

Wow….never imagined I’d be signing up for this! I mean, he’s just 10 years old and still carries a blankie (shhhh…our secret). However, I would much rather have this talk with him than allow him to navigate this slippery slope on his own. Looking forward to our new book arrival (sorta).

  45. Thanks so much for this series. This has been so helpful. I have 3 boys 14, 12, 10 and a girl age 8. This info you ate quoting about has given me such a great spring board. I talk with my kids regularly but just about random stuff. This is really helping me be more thoughtful and organized with my conversations. My family also just moved to Oahu from Idaho so I have really felt the need to really stay connected with my kids because of all the over sensitive emotions. Thanks so much. I actually started following you while I was in Idaho and was excited to now be able to understand the life you are living here. A very heart felt thanks for the help along this journey of raising a family.

    1. Thank you Lisa! And welcome to Oahu! I hope you are enjoying it here, even through this crazy weather we’ve been having. (It will get better soon! :))
So glad you’re enjoying the series! Aloha-

  46. I visited the porn proof your kids website it had tons of information which was interesting. The book looks amazing and it is a subject the definitely needs to be addressed with our youth. They are growing up in a different world.

  47. Oh my… I am so thankful for this series! I just visited the porn proof site and subscribed. As a p.s. I would LOVE to hear more from your heart about the issue (porn) and the ways yall have tackled it in your family. Our son is 9 and we started several years ago (kindergarten) with gentle/non-chalant conversations about pictures we should turn our eyes away from, male/female relationships and interactions and etc… but the need to go deeper is certainly increasing and we’ve felt the pressing need to equip him further lately. I loved how you mentioned to have on-going conversations rather than these big “sit downs” that feel intimidating. Im so grateful for the timing of this series so my husband and I can sit down together and talk through these things. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and heart!

  48. Thanks for this great post. This is something that we do not think about too often, nor do we want to, but another incredible reminder to keep that open channel of communication going with the kids! For sure!!! This is a great reference! Thanks for sending! 🙂 Many blessings!

  49. I visited the Porn Proof Your Kids site and signed up for their newsletter. I’m thrilled there is a book I can read with my son about this. Thanks for the chance to win a copy!

  50. Stacy Nelson says:

Just signed up for newsletter! I have an eleven year nephew that im raising.I can use all the tips I can get. Thanks for this post.

  51. I subscribed to pornproof website. Thank you for sharing all this excellent tips and advice. I have 2 kids and really want to give them the best chance in life and grow up as healthy porn free children. Thank you!

  52. Thank you for getting this information out there. My family has been devastated by the affects of pornography. My ex husband was exposed at a very young age and could never conquer his addiction. The need for a bigger riskier high led to illegal porn and jail. As a single mom of 2 boys and a daughter I often feel overwhelmed at how to best protect them. I am grateful for the resource and pray no family has to be ravaged as mine has been.

  53. I am new to your blog. I found lots of things to check into on PornProof Kids. Thanks! I will be using it for sure!

    1. Well, Welcome to my blog Kathy! 🙂 And thank you for stopping in! Glad you checked out PornProofKids. They’re pretty awesome!
      Aloha–

    1. Awesome!! That is my favorite thing to hear! 🙂 Bless you and aloha-

  55. Lynn in MD says:

I visited the Porn Proof Your Kids site. Good stuff there that I admit I hadn’t thought much about… but really need to as my oldest of 3 boys just started middle school this week!

  56. Subscribed to porn proof your kids!! I have a son entering into kindergarten this year and among other things, exposure to porn is one of my greatest fears. Thank you so much for sharing!

  57. Going to subscribe right now. As the mother of 2 littles who are just starting public school, I think this will be a great resource! Thank you!

  58. I have 3 boys four and under and this is sobering. thanks for the resources and encouragement. went to pornproofkids and will be discussing this with my husband too.

  59. I’m definitely a big believer in preparing and tackling the “big” issues, before they even become an issue. I know our kids are way young now but it’s never too soon to start preparing ourselves, praying for guidance, and reading Godly resources on this subject. Thank you for sharing this post and pointing us to an awesome resource! I’ve signed up for their newsletter!

    xo

  60. Wow, what an important topic. I think my 21-month-old is safe for now, but would love to read this to him as soon as he’s ready. What age do you think that is?

    1. Hi Corinna,
We’ve had parents read the book to kids as young as three, but that is quite young for so much information. However, even four and five year old’s seem to understand quite a bit of the info. We are actually working on a much-requested second book–a Good Pictures Bad Pictures for pre-schoolers, ages 3-5. Kids are on the internet at age 3 and they deserve to have an initial warning. Thanks for asking! Kristen Jenson

  61. Thanks for the information! I have just subscribed and will being talking with my grade-school boys. Thank you for the tips!

  62. Renee Hall says:

I visited the website – great info! Thanks for sharing on a not-so-easy topic.

  63. I visited the site. Looks like a great resource, with lots of helpful tips!

  64. Thank you for posting about this subject! I recently discovered my husbands addiction to porn and need to take all the steps possible to keep this from happening to our sons. I visited the site and am really hoping to win the book 🙂

    1. Oh that just breaks my heart. Thank you for sharing. I’m praying for you, and I do think you’ll appreciate this resource! aloha

  65. Christina says:

I went to the Porn Proof Your Kids site, and would love to be entered into the drawing. Thank you so much for writing on this topic and for sharing what looks to be a great resource!

  66. Cindy Westwood says:

Awesome link and the book Good Pictures, Bad Pictures sounds like a great way to bring up with kiddos and develop common words and understanding. Yay to the authors and publishers! I would love to win a copy, and maybe purchase more for my married daughters.

  67. Leigh Ann says:

Just visited PornProofKids. Very sobering. Excellent, important information. Thanks for getting the word out. Would love to have the book.

  68. I found the site really helpful without being overwhelming. My daughters are 14 and 12, in a Christian school environment and I don’t want to be naive to the dangers they are still facing. My boys are 9 and 5, so I’m not too late to start early. Thanks for the encouraging post (here and on their blog.)

  69. Thanks- I looked over the website. Great information

  70. I went to the website and wow…it has great, great tips. I subscribe, too, to keep the insights coming! With 3 boys, we are absolutely going to implement this stuff. Thanks for this awesome series, Monica!

  71. Monica,
I’m SO thankful for the internet community we share and the invaluable resources out there for parents!! Thank you again for sharing your heart with us as we all fight this battle at home. I am ordering the book TODAY and can’t wait to read through it with all my kids (ranging from ages 9-15). I’m also wondering about using this book as a reference and resource for a parent event called Realtalk that we’re hosting in upstate New York this October. I will be speaking to parents about how to talk to your kids about sex and equipping them for today’s social culture and the dangers in the media. I’m not sure if I need special permission to use or sell the book for the event so if you could let me know that would be very helpful. Thanks!
    Carmella

    1. Hey Carmelia! Thank you, and yes, the internet is such a blessing…which is why I get so sad at all of the potential danger online as well. 🙁
It sounds like you have a lot of influence, and I love that you are interested in sharing this resource. I would suggest you send a quick note to the gals over at Pornproofkids. They are so kind and would likely respond quickly. I’m sure they would be thrilled for you to share the book, but they might have more suggestions for how to best use it, etc! Aloha-

    2. Hi Carmella! We love to help people like you who are helping parents! Please email us at [email protected] for questions about sharing our book at RealTalk. And thanks for asking! Kristen Jenson

  72. I visited the website. I’m definitely going to add this book to our tool chest!

  73. Jenn Borsboom says:

    Hi Monica,

    Thanks for this great post!
I tried to go to this site through Mozilla and I kept getting the Amazon site plus listings for other similar (but also informative ) sites but could get to it from Google Chrome….just thought I’d mention that.

Can you recommend a good, easy to use filter? We had net nanny and it actually crazy hard to deal with, blocking sites that I knew where ok and it was like amaze to disable….

    Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I also have 4 kids, my oldest son is18, twin daughters that are 15 and my youngest son will be13 Ina few weeks.

I love your blogs! We fell in love with Hawaii on our family trip to the Big Island this past spring…. My snowboarding kids are right into surfing every chance we get, (which isn’t unless we travel, because we live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada)!
You are so fortunatw to live in such a great climate!

Thanks for your words and wisdom!
    Mahalo!

    Jenn

    1. Thank you so much Jenn. Hmmm–so sorry you had trouble getting onto the site. That is the first i’ve heard. 🙁 No idea!
We use Covenant Eyes for a filter and so far it has been quite simple to use. No issues at all.
Thank you for visiting my site and I hope you can make it back to Hawaii again before too long!
      Aloha-

  74. Jenn Borsboom says:

    Hi Monica,

    Thanks for this great post!

  75. I subscribed to the other website. As an outpatient mental health therapist I am very aware of the limited resources for children in this area. I plan on using the book as a resource for families and clients I work with. Thank you for addressing this topic and getting parents educated on how to talk about porn with their children.

  76. Thank you! It’s frightening that we have to take such precautionary steps to protect our families, but it is extremely necessary and I’m grateful for resources like these to help us in our efforts! (I visited and subscribed and will have my husband do the same)

  77. Monica, I’m SO glad you are educating us about kids and pornography! I just visited the website and read an excellent kid-appropriate definition of porn-so helpful! I can’t wait to get a copy of this book! Thank you!!

  78. Thank you for this post…I have a teen boy and girl as well as a preteen boy. I will be brining this up in our morning divotional time. Ps I am checking out the pornproofkidkids website as soon as I finish my coment. PS you are such a blessing. Keep fighting the good fight.

  79. Hi Monica
Thank you so much for yet another great post. This one is so important. I have signed up to the PornProof site, and have shared your post on my FB page. I will also be sharing it with my subscribers in my next Mums.Kids.Jesus email. I love your site, and your wisdom. I wish this information had been available years ago. I’m playing catch-up now – my boys are already teens. Many blessings,
    Joanna

    1. Thank you Joanna! So sweet, and so glad you can share it with your readers as well. I need to hop over and check out your site now also! 🙂 Much aloha–

      1. Thanks 🙂 And wow! Your post has already had the highest reach ever on my FB page! There are lots of parents out there needing what you’re sharing!

        1. Oh awesome!! Let’s see this one go viral…It would make me so happy simply because it is such an important message! 🙂 Thank you thank you for sharing!!

  80. I visited! I went on to read their insightful article about reasons kids keep dangerous secrets.

  81. With all the garbage in the news lately, this couldn’t have come at a better time. I’ve subscribed to the email list and am eager to start learning how to protect my kids as early as possible.

  82. I just visited the pornproof website. We have six boys, the oldest of whom was first exposed to porn the year he did cyber school from home (he was 11). I’m planning to order this book if I don’t win the drawing:)

    1. Oh Melissa…I’m so sorry your son was exposed to porn at 11…:( So glad this book is available and I do hope it blesses your family.

  83. This topic makes me so sad and so angry at the same time. I want Jesus to come back now so my precious children don’t have to grow up in this depraved society 🙁 I so so appreciate you sharing this Monica. What an invaluable resource! I love that quote about “internal filters protecting kids”. I feel like this is a real answer to prayer so thank you once again. I have subscribed to the porn proof website and will share it around as well. Thank you again xx

  87. Just subscribed and downloaded the poster. I wish this had been around 15 yrs ago but it’s never too late to educate the kids. Love this post, Monica. Thank you for your boldness to share such a delicate topic.
    xoxoxo

  88. Thank you so much for sharing! My 13 year old and 5 year old sons get on the computer sometimes and look up stuff and this is my worst nightmare that they would come across something. Great info!

  89. Visited the site. Never thought about giving my kids an action plan for when they encounter porn. What a great idea! Thank you for sharing this.

    1. I know, right? I never thought about it either–and I am SO happy to have discovered this book! aloha-

  90. Thank you for sharing this! We’ve talked with our kids about pornography, but it never crossed my mind to come up with an action plan if they see it. I visited the site Porn Proof and subscribed. What a resource! Gives you great ideas of how to enable your kids to deal with bad pictures.

  91. Thank you soooo much for this topic. The struggle is real! Got a super modest boy who reads Manga, which I read and aprove… had no clue eReaders/ebook destributers don’t filter their Manga section, so the adult graphic novels are logged in with Manga or Graphic Novel. Yup! It may not be an actual han, but Houston We Have a Problem! The tip to explain what Porn is!!!! Super important. He had no clue what he was looking at, until he went to a Christian Retreat for Young Men, and heard some testimony

    1. Oh wow Nica–What a story. Thank you for sharing. It is encouraging for me to consider how many ways this book really can make a difference! Aloha-

  92. Melanie C says:

such a great website! This is something I need to start talking to my kids about now.

  93. Visited the site, great info!! Will be reading frequently as I have 3 young boys and want to help them avoid porn at all costs.

  94. Hey. I’m reading all this from Australia. Are we able to get that book here? I would love a copy to help me help my 9 yr old son. As a single mum I’ve been dreading having ‘the talk’ but I see now it has to happen sooner rather than later

    1. G’day, Pam! You can get a Kindle version of it from Amazon. We’re working on getting paperback copies available in AU and in several other countries. Thanks for asking! Kristen Jenson

      1. Don’t have a Kindle so I’ll wait 😉 Thanks xxx

    2. You can buy it online from book depository with free international shipping. (I live in New Zealand)

      1. Awesome I’ll look into it Thanks xxx

  95. This is really helpful- thank you! (Visited the site and will definitely be referring back as we take some of these steps.)

  96. Just visited their site. Love the steps on the poster. I have 3 boys and two of them are in grade school. The examples of kids showing images on their phone freaked me out a bit. I need this book!

  97. Subscribed and looking forward to the resource that porn proof kids will provide.

  98. I visited and subscribed! Thanks!! Any suggestions for a filter than can be used on iphone4? Tried Covenant eyes but the only support 5 and 6 :0(. Can’t upgrade my kiddos device ($$) but want a filter!

    1. Sorry, I dpn’t have any suggestions, except I have heard that you can adjust settings on iPhones to make it pretty safe. Just a thought. 🙂

      1. Monica, thank you so much for the information in this article. I have an 11 yr. old boy, and have vowed to protect him any way I can and prepare him mentally for things these types of attacks he will face growing up, and your research will prove most helpful!
        Thanks much!!!!

Sally, there is a FREE internet filter for windows, called k-9 web protection. I installed this on my sons computer and set the filtering to the desired level. They recently released app versions for Adroid and iOS devices and the best part it is all FREE. It isn’t as thorough as some filters, but will get you started. Below is a link to a review and some alternatives, and also the filtering software download itself. Hope this is of help.

  99. Thank you for all the effort you put into your blog. I love all the tips I find as I read it. I’m looking very forward to this 6 week series. I’m a momma to 3 boys (9, 8, 5) and a little lady (3). Needless to say I will take all the knowledge available to the coming years.
