If you know me at all, you know that I love nothing more than enjoying great meals with family and friends. It’s kind of in my blood. My Grandpa was a butcher and a grocery store owner, (not to mention a farmer on the side) and I grew up in a family where the day kind of centered around…dinner time. When I was growing up, Sunday dinners were a thing. My parents always cooked up a feast, and any number of extra people would just “happen” to stop by just around dinner time. Those are great memories, and I want my boys to also grow up with memories of gathering around the table enjoying meals with great food and great conversation.
We don’t have family on the island most of the year, but here in Hawaii ohana means family: Family of origin, or family of choice. And we are blessed to have a really great extended ohana. My favorite thing now is to host friends at our house for meals when we can. Especially if it falls on a Sunday :).
But here’s the dilemma: we also love to spend our weekends at the beach and doing fun things outside of the house. Which means that sometimes I want to have friends over but know that I won’t have time to work in the kitchen all day. An occasional pizza takeout is OK, but when I can, I really prefer to serve a home-cooked meal.
Now I have the absolute perfect solution for times like these, and it kind of changes everything.
Tony Roma’s sent us a big, beautiful variety of their pre-cooked ribs and pulled pork to try. There was so much food I had to call in a crew of fun, meat-loving friends to come over and join us for dinner.
We all enjoyed a beautiful day. (No fussing in the kitchen allowed). Then when everyone arrived, I tossed the saucy baby back ribs onto the grill, IN THE VERY PAN THEY ARRIVED IN…
I heated up two containers of boneless pork ribs on the stove top (for just about five minutes..) Then I zapped a big bowl of pulled pork in the microwave. Everything smelled SOOOO good!
Prepping this feast took literally TEN MINUTES. My friend Jules brought over a salad and some broccoli, and I set out some buns for the pulled pork, and a bowl of baked beans. It was a FEAST!
This was my favorite Sunday dinner in a LONG TIME. No stress. No fuss. Just really good food. This was authentic, fall-off the bone BBQ! I don’t think I could have done better if I did the whole meal from scratch. The flavors were incredible. I had seconds… of everything.
I think everyone did.
And…this is no lie: Two days later I went to the store and bought every single one of the Tony Roma’s products that we had been given because I now plan to keep them on hand for times such as these.
