By the time this is published, Josiah and I should be in Southern California. We have an exciting weekend ahead (more on that in a second.) But somehow it seems like every time I am crazy busy packing up for a trip, I find myself starting a coffee date post. (Weird, right?))
Though I’ve never considered myself a serious procrastinator, Dave had me watch this Ted Talk , and it was definitely insightful. And funny.
(Now I’m pretty sure the Panic Monster will appear any minute, but until then…)
Grab a quick cup of something warm and let’s catch up, shall we? I’ll share a few updates with some random photos mixed in…(because you can never see too many sunsets, right?)
First I wanna know: How are you doing? How’s 2018 treating you so far? Anything exciting going on in your family? Be sure to leave me some updates at the bottom of the post, ok?
As for us: Life has been full and and mostly good. One minor glitch was that last weekend Luke developed a pretty serious ear infection (serious, as in — inner ear + outer ear, + mastoiditis = yikes!) landing him in the ER twice in two days. They almost admitted him to the hospital, but I urged them to let him go home (for a few reasons but
mostly a little bit because I didn’t want to miss my hair appointment the next morning.)(Who wants to travel with gray roots?)
Thankfully, the antibiotics did their job and Luke was able to enjoy his 14th birthday! He spent his day boating with Dr. Shormann and friends, and then went on to a super fun sushi dinner with the family.
I’ve loved Luke so much as a 13-year-old, I have to admit I wasn’t feeling ready for 14. But then again no one exactly asked me, so there ya go. 14.
Aaaand, as for his bday gift? I’m happy to report that we finally settled our on-going CELL PHONE DEBATE by getting him his very own…super cool…kinda fancy...(wait for it…) FLIP PHONE! Every 14-year-old should be so lucky. (I’m hoping it starts a trend with the teens, but I’m not holding my breath.)
Now…as for Josiah and I!… We are headed to Santa Barbara! And though Josiah suggested I not
jinx things say too much, I’m just way too excited to keep totally quiet. (I also believe a few of you will pray…) So I’ll just cooly, quietly, (shh, this is like a whisper) mention that Josiah has been invited to a scholarship competition weekend at Westmont!! He is super excited, moderately nervous, and very much trusting God for the outcome.
A few more notes while we’re on the topic: I still hope to eventually share a post about Josiah’s gap year because (it’s been really great and) I think it is an important conversation as some of you look ahead to your own kids’ futures. Also, in my Boy Mom Book I’ll be sharing about our story of applying for and choosing a college, especially as it relates to Boys, Work, and Money. Suffice it to say, we’ve learned a lot, and have adjusted our college expectations because: PRIVATE COLLEGES ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE’RE NOT MILLIONAIRES. (bummer, right?) Yet, we’ve also found that when you work really hard and pray, (and in Josiah’s case, take a gap year) sometimes amazing things happen. This weekend is one of those amazing things. (thanks for prayers!) We’ll keep you posted.
So, that’s California.
But California is not the end of my trip.
When we wrap up our weekend, I’ll be sending Josiah back to Hawaii, while I head to Colorado Springs to meet with my book agent and my publishing team at Waterbrook! I’m so excited! I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time! At first they told me the weather was going to be in the 50’s or 60’s, but as of today they’re forecasting SNOW! I sure hope that ONE SWEATER I OWN keeps me toasty for days.
More stuff I want to share:
I’m so excited! This book arrived just in time to take on my trip!!
I really love Jamie Ivey. She does amazing things and she’s just a big breath of fresh air. (Remember that time I was on her podcast!? If not you should probably give it a listen. It was fun!) … Anyways, after years of podcasting, Jamie wrote a book, and I know it’s gonna be good! Find out more on her book page.
Also — My son Jonah wrote a really cool poem. It is charming and creative, really. You can read it on big brother Josiah’s website, HERE.
