And it just occurred to me that in all my years blogging, I’ve neglected to share much about our cat.
Recently I wrote about our dog, but today it’s the cat’s turn! Well, “Coco”, as we call her, is pretty special. Our very first pet was a cat, and we’ve never been the same since. I’ll never forget that day, about nine years ago, when Dave and I were still “BP” (Before Pets.) We sat in our living room one cozy rainy night after the kids were in bed, and I sensed something was missing. Looking at an empty chair next to us, I imagined a cat curled up and purring.
“We need a cat” I blurted out. Dave nodded, and that was our silent agreement to start looking for our first family pet. Here in Hawaii feral cats run rampant so we knew the best idea would be to adopt a rescue cat. Before we ever made our way to a Humane Society though, we found ourselves rescuing our own cat when we saw a gang of cats behind our local pizza joint. We brought home an orange tabby cat (and it was October), so we appropriately named him Pumpkin. Since Pumpkin was about a year old when we brought him home, he never totally lost his wild side; he wasn’t very snuggly, and he remained quite independent. But our whole family still agreed: A cat made our house a home.
Pumpkin has gone on to kitty cat heaven since then, but just over a year ago, after an especially rough surf contest, I got word that some friends had rescued a liter of kittens who had been abandoned by their mommy. As I drove home that day, I found myself pulling off to swing by our friends’ home, “just to have a look.”
There was no resisting this little Siamese mix cutie, so Luke and I came home that day with his consolation prize: COCONUT KITTY.
And from that day on, Luke claimed Coco as his own. He dotes on her, builds her special sleeping forts, feeds her from his hand, and carries her around like a baby. Luke is extremely protective of “his girl” and has no shame showing his affection for her even in front of his crew of buddies.
Luke gets into some trouble during his homeschool days because he’s constantly setting up “Coco forts” under his surfboards, between pillows, and whatever else he can find.
It’s a total distraction from school, but “she loves it” he will declare, passionately. How can I argue?
I‘m pretty crazy about her too. Oh, and let’s not forget Dave. He gets home from work and immediately Coco jumps into his lap for a little chin scratch and cuddles…My mom calls Dave “the cat whisperer.” Coco falls asleep on his lap in about two minutes.
It should not come as a surprise then that Coco prances around like she owns the house. And the yard. And the skate park…
Coco eats like a Princess too, nibbling small bites at a time, and then wanting to go outside for a little exercise.
Being so fickle about going in and out of the house, she finally taught herself to slide open the screen door, making it much easier to come and go as she pleases. (We think she’s really smart.) The boys like to choose Coco’s food, always picking out what they think she would enjoy most (by what they think they would enjoy the most.) Since our family enjoys rotisserie chicken, they couldn’t resist the offer to try out Meow Mix® Bistro Recipes™ cat food Rotisserie Chicken Flavor. And as we imagined, it passed the Coco test. The boys laughed so hard when she took her first taste and then (no joke!) looked up at them and said the most perfect “ME-OW.” I only wish we had the video camera rolling!
